The Lagos State Police Command has detained a 65-year-old - Chibuike Azubike, who proclaimed himself the “Obi of Lagos,” along with three alleged accomplices, accusing them of planning a fraudulent installation ceremony on September 13, 2025, to deceive attendees with a fake ₦1.5 billion palace project.

The Police arrested Azubike and his alleged accomplices—Chief Chibuzor Ani, 57; Chief Martins Nwaodika, 65; and Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi, 41—on Tuesday, September 10, 2025, at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja. The group had publicized plans to unveil a prototype of a supposed ₦1.5 billion “Palace of Obi of Lagos State” at Apple Hall in Amuwo Odofin, an event the police described as a calculated ploy to swindle unsuspecting individuals. Authorities sealed off the venue to prevent public disturbance and protect potential victims.

Deputy Public Relations Officer Babaseyi Oluseyi stated that Azubike confessed during interrogation that the installation was a fraudulent scheme designed to exploit guests financially. Azubike, a native of Obodoukwu Ancient Kingdom in Ideato North, Imo State, also admitted he falsely claimed to be an engineer, revealing he was only a supplier of construction materials. The police confirmed that Azubike lacked any legitimate chieftaincy backing or recognition for his self-styled title.

The planned ceremony had sparked controversy, with invitations circulating for a grand unveiling of a palace that promised an office complex, event center, guest house, and shopping center. The police acted on intelligence to thwart the event, deploying tactical teams, including the Eko Strike Force, to maintain order. Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh emphasized the illegality of such actions, urging residents to remain cautious of impostors exploiting traditional institutions.

A similar case occurred in April 2023, when Frederick Nwajagu, the Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate, was arrested for unlawfully claiming a chieftaincy title in Lagos. Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects are expected to face charges upon conclusion.
